Ludington, Michigan, a city on Lake Michigan at the mouth of the Pere Marquette River, was originally named Pere Marquette, then after lumberman James Ludington, who developed the area with logging operations, and was incorporated in 1873

Stay Safe

The dunes can be deceaving an dlook easier then they are. Stay Hidrated and informed. 

The park originated in 1920 when 25 acres on the east side of Silver Lake were donated for park purposes by Carrie E. Mears, the daughter of lumber baron Charles Mears. In 1926, the federal government transferred 900 acres to the state, which became Sand Dunes State Park in 1949.

Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore became a national lakeshore on October 21, 1970. President Nixon signed the legislation that established the lakeshore. To preserve the natural features of the area, including forests, beaches, dunes, and glacial formations
